Nora de Izcue, Peru’s first woman filmmaker made Runan Caycu (We Are People) in 1973 when she was 39 years old. It was a revolutionary documentary to capture the realities of indigenous Quechua-speaking farmers in Peru in their fight for social justice and agrarian reform. But because it also showed the violent repression of civilians by the military, it was banned by Peru’s dictatorship under General Juan Velasco Alvarado, forcing the film into hiding.
